Panasonic launches its Lumix S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras

Panasonic first announced its Lumix S1 and S1R full-frame mirrorless cameras last year, but now the company is sharing the full details of two products it hopes will be recognized for their photo chops just as much as for Panasonic’s well-known video strengths. The formula is something we’ve seen from both Sony and more recently Canon: one of them is a high-megapixel resolution beast that’s aimed at pro-level photographers — the 47.3MP S1R in this case — and the other is a more well-rounded camera for a wider audience of hybrid shooters. That’s the 24.2MP S1, which will retail for $2,499 (body only) or $3,399 with a 24-105mm lens. The S1R body costs $3,699 or $4,599 with the same lens. Both use the L-Mount, a system owned by Leica with Panasonic and Sigma as licensees and members of the L-Mount Alliance. Read more

How to pick between the iPhone X and iPhone 8

Apple introduced three brand new iPhones on September 12th. Three! They include the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus , which have faster processors and better cameras than last year’s iPhone 7 — and now you can charge them wirelessly. And then there’s the iPhone X , a $1,000 smartphone that Apple is basically trying to market as a gadget from the future that arrived a little early. It’s the first iPhone ever to have an OLED screen, and even better, that stunning display basically runs edge to edge.  iPhone X comes with other radical changes like the removal of the home button in favor of a new feature Apple is calling Face ID, which scans your face to unlock your iPhone instead of the traditional Touch ID method still used on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.

Microsoft Not For My College Bound Kids

Microsoft MSFT -1.83% recently revealed some fantastic tools for education at its education focused event. An expansion of Microsoft Teams, HoloLens integration with educational tools, Minecraft Education Edition, mixed (augmented) reality and an optimized OS in Windows 10 S were some of the highlights. Then Microsoft took a hard 180 degree turn and revealed the expected Surface Laptop with a hard sell. Before the Surface Laptop hit the stage, Microsoft picked up the gauntlet and slapped Google GOOGL +2.56% with it. Whether or not it was felt down to the stack of Chromebooks in classrooms around the world is yet to be determined.Announcing a line of Windows 10 S machines starting at under $200 with tech partners such as Dell , HP and so on was Microsoft looking to step into the classroom. The suite of products offered along with the physical machines should help Microsoft get a toehold in that market. Read more

What Is Google Wifi?

Google Wifi has been out in the US since the end of last year , but as is often the case with big tech launches, other countries have had to wait. For people in the UK, that wait is over, as it is now on sale . Maybe you’ve heard about Google Wifi, and perhaps something about mesh networking, but you’re still not quite certain why you should be all that bothered about the router system. We’re here to explain exactly what’s different about Google Wifi compared to your average router , and why you should be excited concerning its imminent arrival.   First of all, the basics.  The idea of Google Wifi is to provide multiple devices which hook up together to ensure better wireless coverage across your home. One of the router devices – they’re all identical compact little white cylinders – connects to your DSL or cable modem as normal, and the others are strategically placed elsewhere around your home, connecting wirelessly to this first unit, and ensuring a strong ...

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 has been recalled

Samsung’s disastrous battery issues have invalidated the praise we have heaped upon its beautifully designed, but fatally flawed smartphone. We leave this review up as testament to almost-was history, but have removed the score in light of the events. We do not recommend you purchase the Note 7, even if you're able to find it in stock. You can read more about the recall and the events that have transpired on theVerge.com's Galaxy Note 7 recall Story Stream .There is no greater evidence of The Future of Computing than the big-screened smartphone. Big phones have become the de facto personal computers for many people, taking the place of countless devices, including laptops and tablets. They’ve become more than just phones in ways that smaller devices haven’t matched — research shows that owners of phablets use their devices a lot more than others. But big phones come with their own set of baggage that isn’t seen on normal-sized phones. They are frequently clumsy to use, awk...
